"For me the attraction of the Elivate course was the opportunity to combine a practical placement with study. I found that this enabled me to directly link what I was learning during study weeks and writing essays to the work I was involved with and vice versa, and I know that this improved my practice and my learning. During my Elivate year I was really struck by the importance of studying the Bible and reflecting on your own skills and development. I realised that whilst I was an able practitioner I wouldn't be doing any job properly if I wasn't able to base everything on the Bible and be keen to continue learning. Thus during the year I felt that it was right to take time for further study and this eventually led me to complete a degree in Applied Theology with Community and Family Studies at Moorlands. Now working for Scripture Union I am still able to identify the skills and good practice that I learnt during my year on the Elivate course."? Clare Luxton
"At the age of 30 I left my profession of carpentry (like Jesus!) and entered into the world of full time Youth work. My job role in the church was to oversee and develop the children's & youth ministry which at the time was 80+ individuals, as well as speaking in local schools. Having spent 10 years voluntarily leading youth groups, I was feeling a little weary, and so I looked for a year’s course that would excite and envision me again for the important role of working with young people. Prior to this I had used my annual leave to attend theological training with New Frontiers but now I was taking the plunge into working specifically with the young and I needed to broaden my practical understanding. I chose Elivate at Moorlands College to provide the missing ingredients. With a new job, Elivate was manageable yet challenging, forcing me to think and dig deep to find the answers. The course was well programmed, varied, well taught and interactive which I personally prefer. We had a week of intensive training in September and March and throughout the year I worked on 5 assignments. I like to learn on the job, so everything I learnt on the course I tried to apply in some way to my new job. I planned a successful adventure weekend for 50 young people off the back of one my assignments and I produced a 12 week teaching course from the book of Nehemiah that I was able to teach my young people. I completed Elivate nearly five years ago. I’m still in the same role, working with young people and have seen God develop this work through me. Looking back Elivate gave me just the right springboard to launch into a new phase of ministry for God.
