Thinking of sending us a student?

"Over the last few years a group of Ministers and Youth Workers have been working together with the vision that the Churches in Huddersfield would serve our local schools. Eventually Huddersfield Scripture Union Partnership (HSUP) was born with the tag line ‘local Christians serving local schools’. The group of workers and volunteers has grown and we now have experienced schools workers and a gap year student who work with Church youth workers, local volunteers and ‘Hand to Mouth Ministries’ a puppet ministry to children.

We wanted to offer a gap year to young people, which would involve a year of discipleship, personal development, service, and experience in youth and schools work. We knew that we needed to invest in our gap year students. Our aim was to provide training and structured learning along with practical experience in youth and schools work. We also wanted our workers to complete the year having done something ‘credible’, so those going on to University or going on to a job could show employees that they have had training throughout the year.

The Elivate Course provides this sort of credible training. It fits well with a year-out structure with a residential at the beginning of the year and one after Christmas and it’s balance of Biblical Studies combined with practical training relevant to youth work has made it a valuable tool for us. Our gap year students have also benefited from getting together with other people who are doing year outs and working for Christian organisations.

We also felt it was important for workers to have traced their own development throughout the year. I know for myself when I did my gap years doing Relay with UCCF (Universities and Colleges Christian fellowship,) that God taught me so much about his amazing grace and love for me that I learnt a lot about how God was developing me. Having documented this for myself I know that this is an important aspect of stepping out and serving Jesus. The personal development essays and the portfolio really address this area, causing students at the beginning and the end of the year to see what God is doing and to see how they have developed.

As a team leader it’s great that another organisation puts the work into training, setting essays, giving deadlines and marking them! It means I can spend time looking at specific training that we need."
