One of the great benefits of studying at Moorlands is that you are exposed to a range of studies within Applied Theology and you rub shoulders with those training for quite different spheres of work. This adds up positively to a broad appreciation of Christian ministry and a more rounded and mature approach to serving Christ. Students often graduate with key skills & a real passion for their speciality.
The multi-dimensional challenges and demands of church leadership are examined. New models of church, and new ideas and trends in evangelism are analysed in interaction with both the theory and practitioners. Finding faith, discipleship, equipping others and church planting are investigated from biblical and practical perspectives. The programme is designed to help you develop both a robust theology of practice and your own personal and practical gifts.
Pastoral ministry is also carefully considered. Traditional skills are looked at in fresh ways. Pastoral care and people skills, encouraging discipleship and community, the place of counseling and social action, leading worship and helping people at times of crisis are all studied against the background of today's society. Placements and case study help us link practice and theory.
Subjects such as missiology, cultural anthropology, folk religions, new trends in mission and worldwide theologies are explored to gain new perspectives on world mission and to train you in appropriate attitudes and skills for the demands of cross-cultural work. Both block placements are in cross-cultural settings.
The opportunities and challenges of working with children and schools are examined against the background of both Christian thinking and government policy, such as that represented by the ‘Every Child Matters’ initiative. The programme helps you to build theologies of childhood, faith development and education that can underpin effective work among children and in support of schools. Placements provide a context for wider learning and critical reflection on practice. Students taking all the specialist children and schools work modules will receive the Moorlands College Certificate in Children and Schools Work, in addition to their BA (Hons) in Applied Theology.
We offer a 'hands-on' approach to understanding young people and the communities they come from. Critical issues such as adolescent development, the youth culture debate and the value of team work are covered. You are encouraged to reflect critically on the effectiveness of youth work from both church and local authority perspectives and models.
Students can now graduate with a JNC-recognised BA (Hons) in Applied Theology (Youth and Community Work), opening all sorts of new opportunities to work with local authorities and secular agencies as well as with churches and Christian organisations.
Drawing on biblical perspectives, the course examines all age communities, how families relate, parenting, issues around divorce and co-habitation, the professional skills required to function effectively as a family worker and, in fact, just about everything to do with working alongside families in the context of their community. Carefully chosen, professionally supervised placements give hands -on experience of community and family work. Students taking all the specialist community and family studies modules may graduate with a BA (Hons) in Applied Theology (Community and Family Studies).
