Helen Hender

Placements Manager and Lecturer at Moorlands College


Helen lectures, oversees placements, manages the practice modules and delivers the Moorlands College Vocations Strategy.

Helen grew up in Poole in Dorset and became a Christian in her early twenties whilst working on board Cruise Liners in the Caribbean. Helen returned to Bournemouth briefly before spending a year with Youth With A Mission. Following a desire to study God’s Word, Helen undertook the first ever accredited BA Degree at Moorlands College, returning a number of years later to complete her Masters. Helen has over 25 years’ experience of working in the Voluntary and Statutory Sector in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset. Her roles have included working for the local Church, the Local Authority, Local Council for Voluntary Services and the Connexions Service.

Having spent ten years working for the Connexions Advice and Information Service, Helen is passionate about supporting and preparing students to reflect, question and explore what ‘Life After Moorlands’ holds for them. Students undertake a double practice module each year which is carefully designed to incorporate a large number of practical and reflective elements developing transferable skills and knowledge, preparing students to succeed and thrive in any work environment.

When not at work, Helen is a Trustee for Michael House Homeless Charity and for Coastline Vineyard Church in Bournemouth. She also teaches dance fitness classes and enjoys spending as much time as possible with family and friends.

Research interests

Helen is interested in how the Church relates to, works alongside and partners with others within the community to meet the ever increasing gap in services for vulnerable people within our communities.
